H.R.: Ray, you played several times in Italy. Do you have a special bond with the Italian public?
Ray Wilson: I think Genesis and their music has a special bond with the Italian public. I love Italy the people and the culture. I hope the feeling is mutual, at least from my fans. Some Italian people are slowly discovering my music. This makes performing much more enjoyable.<
Do you feel this connection when you play in Italy?
Yes, like I said before. Genesis are very special for Italian people and I feel honoured to be part of their history. The music of Genesis is magical and Italian fans have a real passion for it, which is great to see.
You reinterpret Genesis music in a very personal way. What are your criteria?
I play song I love and that I feel I do a good job of. Carpet Crawlers, Mama, No Son of Mine all sit very well with me, as a vocalist. That is the criteria I follow.
Can you tell us something about the setlist in Rome on 21 September?
I will perform a mix of songs from Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and my own Music. In Your Eyes, In the Air Tonight, Carpet Crawlers, Inside, for example.
What will the line-up be?

You do very long tours. How do you like being “on the road” so long?
It is something I have grown to love. I didn’t always enjoy touring, but it is my life now. I couldn’t be happy without it.
Would you like to do more concerts in Italy?
Of course. I do some shows in Italy, but it would be good to do more, for sure.
Would you like that to become a regular appointment (coming to Italy on tour)?
Yes. I could add a few shows every year. Would be perfect.
How easy is it for you to devote time to write new material you are working on the production of a new record ?
I always seem to find time for this. When you travel so much, there are many situations that influence your music. I am always very insprired by people and their struggles. I love to perform and allow people to escape for a while, during the concert.
What’s the best memory of the time you were a member of Genesis?
Probably performing in Glasgow. It was amazing to perform in Scotland as the frontman of such rock legends as Genesis.
Did you feel the weight of Phil Collins’ “ghost”?
Not really no. Phil is trully great, but I am different and my own person. I was pround to do this job after him and Peter.
They always ask them so we ask you: do you think that Genesis can or should be reunited (in the original line-up, of course)? And how would you like a super-reunion with all the members who played in the band over the years, including yourself of course?
I have no idea. It would be such a great idea to involve everyone in a tour. I really do not understand why they do not do this.
Speaking of your musical career there is a song that you are particularly attached to is if yes why?
Alone, Change, Calling all Stations, Inside. They are all songs from important times in my life.
Ray at the end of your summer tour, can you say that all roads lead to Rome?
Yes, for sure. It is really true for me this time.
They say that when you turn 50, you start thinking about regrets. Do you have any?
No, none. Everything has it’s purpose, good and bad. It’s all part of life. We should never waste time with regret.
And what dreams do you still have?
Just to stay healthy, happy and do my music. Simple really.

Ray Wilson ha tenuto un concerto in acustico.
Il cantante scozzese ha eseguito alcuni brani dei Genesis dell’era Gabriel assieme alla band irpina Notturno Concertante (Lucio Lazzaruolo, Raffaele Villanova alle chitarre e Nadia Khomoutova al violino) e altri della sua produzione da solista, che annovera ormai quasi venti album.
Il Notturno Concertante, storica band irpina, ha all’attivo sei album ed uno nuovo di prossima pubblicazione dal titolo “Let them say”.
Ray era accompagnato, nella parte finale del suo concerto, dai suoi insostituibili musicisti nei tour europei: Michał Łyczek alle tastiere e Ali Ferguson alla chitarra.
La serata è stata aperta da una formazione composta da alcuni musicisti, infaticabili fan dei Genesis, provenienti da alcune Tribute Band italiane. Questo gruppo, i ‘Masters of Jam‘, costituitosi per questa occasione, sul palco di Stazione, ha interpretato alcuni dei più noti brani dei Genesis; il chitarrista Max Pugi, anche lui componente del gruppo, si è occupato della Direzione Musicale.

Il 6, 7 e 8 settembre 1982, i Genesis tornano in concerto in Italia dopo 7 anni di assenza. Ecco il racconto di quei giorni.

Per tanti ragazzi italiani – come me, che sono del 1963 – è il primo live dei Genesis, i quali non venivano in concerto dal lontano 25 marzo 1975. Allora c’era ancora Peter Gabriel, era il The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Tour e quello del Parco Ruffini di Torino, sarebbe stato il loro ultimo concerto, per molti anni, a causa degli scontri con la polizia. La tournée italiana infatti fu annullata dopo gli incidenti e i tafferugli in altri live, che stanno per condannare il nostro paese a una quarantena senza artisti stranieri durata anni. Di fatto resta uno degli ultimi di quel periodo. GUARDA E ASCOLTA LO SPECIALE DI HORIZONS RADIO SUL CONCERTO DI TORINO DEL 1975.
C’è quindi grande attesa soprattutto per i vecchi brani, da Supper’s Ready a The Lamb, mentre è nettamente minore l’interesse verso gli album più recenti, specialmente Abacab.

La prima data è a Tirrenia (Pisa), alla Festa Nazionale dell’Unità. Ecco un lungo servizio della RAI, a cui non è sfuggita l’importanza di questo evento per tanti appassionati dei Genesis.

E’ un’estate magica, quella del 1982. Noi del ’63 abbiamo dato l’esame di maturità, studiando nei momenti lasciati liberi dall’indimenticabile Mondiale di Calcio di Spagna, vinto proprio dall’Italia. Poi ci siamo goduti il meritato riposo. Questi primi giorni di settembre, con i Genesis a pochi chilometri, sono l’ennesimo tassello meraviglioso di quel periodo.
E Phil Collins lo sa. Sa che siamo in attesa da tanti anni e sa che siamo i Campioni del Mondo. E ci gioca, con noi, ci fa urlare e ridere, sa che ci può prendere in giro e scherzare con noi, che abbiamo “fame” di loro.

Infatti, nella seconda tappa, due date: il 7 e l’8 al Palaeur di Roma, la sua presentazione è trascinante. Ascoltala al minuto 16.00 della registrazione audio del concerto:
Certo, non sono più i Genesis che ascolto da quando ho 14 anni. Quelli di Nursery Cryme, il primo che ho scoperto di loro o di Foxtrot, il primo che ho comprato. Non sono neanche quelli di The Lamb, che ai primi ascolti mi ha spiazzato e che ho rivalutato più avanti negli anni, un caposaldo della storia del prog e non solo o di A Trick e Wind, quelli senza più Peter, ma ancora ottimi, fino al capolavoro live Seconds Out.
Adesso non c’è più neanche Steve e gli ultimi album non sono minimamente all’altezza di quelli degli anni d’oro, ma i Genesis sono davanti a noi, in carne e ossa (GUARDA LE FOTO DI ROMA), capaci ancora di farci sognare con Supper’s Ready, I Know What I Like, lunghi medley evocativi dei tempi migliori, come The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway + Watcher Of The Skies o In The Cage + The Cinema Show + The Colony Of Slippermen + Afterglow.
Supper’s Ready, appunto, ancora nelle scalette dei Genesis, ma ormai saltuariamente e con i concerti contati. Phil la presenta ricordandone il compleanno, perché in questi giorni compie 10 anni. Anzi, pare che tutto il tour prenda spunto da questo anniversario, oltre a pubblicizzare il terzo album dal vivo Three Sides Live. Per chi è lì con uno, anzi due convitati di pietra, Peter e Steve, e per chi evoca nei cori l’ex cantante, è un’apoteosi. Io l’ho adorata in Foxtrot, ma ho anche apprezzato la versione di Seconds Out. E devo dire che questa non delude affatto, anche perché Daryl Steurmer è ormai al quarto tour con i Genesis, il secondo in cui la suite è presente (manca nel Duke e nell’Abacab Tour).
I due assenti, appunto: Gabriel e Hackett. Non ci siamo certo fatti scappare Peter due anni prima, io l’ho adorato il 28 settembre 1980 al Parco delle Cascine, a Firenze, (il giorno dopo tappa a Genova e il 30 a Torino, vedi video sopra). Gabriel è stato tra i primi ad arrivare in Italia dopo la “riapertura delle frontiere”.
E poi abbiamo apprezzato Steve meno di due mesi dopo, sei date italiane, io l’ho visto il 26 novembre al Palaeur di Roma. Mancavano quindi gli altri tre per riformare idealmente il quintetto base, quelli che per qualcuno sono i veri e unici Genesis (compresi tanti di coloro che sono a Tirrenia e Roma e che lo fanno capire in molti modi, anche poco civili, a volte).
Ecco perché l’atmosfera è caldissima. Impossibile restare seduti, ci accalchiamo tutti verso il palco e Phil ci prega di indietreggiare, c’è chi si abbraccia e chi si spintona (una mini-rissa si sviluppa proprio nel mio settore di parterre). Ma tutti alla fine siamo sudati, senza voce e felici, anche chi non ha gradito certi brani, perché i “nostri” Genesis hanno saputo miscelare vecchio e nuovo sapientemente.
E tutti, credo, pensiamo: alla prossima.
