Unforgettable stories and memories, through audio, video, documents and much more.
The disc has a particular structure and came out in two different versions in Europe and the USA.
"I wasn't dying to make a solo record, but I thought it could be quite fun", Mike says in his autobiography:
Mike recorded it in 1979 while Genesis was inactive, during which he and Tony Banks made their first solo albums.
La title track 24 minutes is based on Peter Currell Brown's 1965 novel "Smallcreep's Day", which tells the story of Mr. Smallcreep and the journey to discover himself, through the assembly line of the factory where he worked for forty years. Compared to the original which inspired it, the story narrated by Mike in the album includes a happy end.
Rutherford used short musical ideas developed over several years and unused. These songs have become a long song that takes up an entire side of the vinyl.
"One of the nicest things about making the record was thinking about who I wanted to work with - Mike recalls -: Simon Phillips, a drummer I'd always admired; Noel McCalla, a session singer with a very high voice, and Ant on keyboards. In any other band working with other musicians would be seen as the start of a slippery slope: 'What's wrong with us?' But Tony was also taking the opportunity to make a solo album while Phil was away and the bond between the three of us was such that we never felt threatened by anything we did outside the band."
The cover was designed and illustrated by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, who produced Genesis albums "A Trick of the Tail", "Wind & Wuthering" and "... And Then There Were Three ... . ".
"Storm Thorgerson had designed several covers for Genesis and
so it seemed like a natural choice for Smallcreep's Day design ", recalls Mike.
After choosing an image he wanted on the cover, Thorgerson's idea was to spray it with the ink being developed, so that it only came out in part. Six different versions were produced, e Rutherford chose the design he liked best.
"As an album Smallcreep's Day is strong enough from an instrumental point of view, but its true value it was like a breath of fresh creative air - Mike still remembers -. Unlike other bands, our solo projects were never a reaction to being unhappy with what we were doing as a group and going forward. We'd always work on solo projects between albums. It was one of the things that marked us out and made us unusual as a band, and I think it was an important part of what kept us going, too. We learned how much we appreciated the other members of the band and, because we were doing something different and challenging individually."
The album hit number 13 on the UK album chart and the number 163 on the United States Billboard 200.
Rutherford released two singles on the album. The first, "Working in Line" with the track not included in the album "Compression" on the B side, was released in February 1980. A second, "Time and Time Again" and "At the End of the Day", is was published in July.
