Nick D'Virgilio (Calling All Stations & Steve Hackett): the solo album "Invisible" is out - BUY

Nick D'Virgilio, one of the drummers of Genesis' Calling All Stations and the last two albums of Steve Hackett, has released a new solo album.

English English Italian Italiano

With the name NDV, the American drummer has released a new album entitled "Invisible" on the English Electric label.

Buy it here:

It's a concept album in which many participate guest star, including two bassists from the Genesis galaxy like Tony Levin and Jonas Reingold.

Listen to the single "I Know The Way":

This song is the central piece of the disc. The choir melody is a recurring theme throughout the album:

Drums, loops, vocals: Nick D 'Virgilio

Bass: Jonas Reingold

Guitars: Randy McStine

Piano and Synthesizers: Jordan Rudess

Background Vocals: Nick D 'Virgilio, Kat Bower, Beth Cohen, Nathan Heironimus, Sophia D' Virgilio

Brass / Strings: Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios

So NDV tells about the birth of the disc in his website:

«The idea of this story came to me for the first time when I started concerts with the show Totem del Cirque Du Soleil.

It would have been the first time in my musical career that I would have been listened to but not seen. I had never played in "Broadway" style shows where I was in the "hole" with the rest of the band. I am and have always been a rocker. Strong and proud on stage with the band. But for Totem I played the drums and sang from a stand behind the stage.

The music for the Cirque shows serves to support the incredible artists who literally stake their lives in the name of entertainment for up to 10 shows a week.

In the end it was a very special moment not only for me, but also for my family. I didn't have to play just the drums, but also the guitar and then sing a song right in the center of the stage, in addition to some other small parts. I also became the band leader's assistant, which meant that I was conducting a couple of shows a week.

During my spare time, I was writing music and after a while I started piling up a bunch of riffs, melodies, song ideas and more. The word "invisible" kept coming to mind. It made me think of people who really do hard work in the world. Or that they don't have a job at all. The outliers. The ones we all take for granted. Those we will never know, but if they weren't there, our lives would hardly be the same anymore.

It was at that point that I realized I wanted to write a concept album. Something I had never done before. I had the idea and I knew it was a concept that I wanted to explore. I studied, asked questions, looked, listened and learned the best I could. Although this story is fiction, I have drawn on some of my personal experiences and have disseminated them everywhere.

The main thing this record has done for me is to reaffirm my strong belief that we are all here for something. Be it small or large. Whether everyone knows your name or not. We all have a purpose. Find your."

D'Virgilio played with i genesis, in the album "Calling All Stations" (in "Alien Afternoon" (first part), "If That's What You Need", "Uncertain Weather", and "Small Talk" on percussion) ...

And he also played drums on albums "The Night Siren"(in the song"Martian Sea") is "At The Edge of Light"(in"Those Golden Wings") by Steve Hackett.

NDV's solo debut album, "Karma" (2001), came out while he's busy with the titans of American progressive rock Spock's Beard, with whom he started as a drummer in the early 90s, before taking on other roles as a solo singer and frontman live in 2002 for four studio albums before his departure in 2011.

He performed with i Tears For Fears, with whom he has been touring for over a decade, edto 2007 he is also drummer of the British band Big Big Train.

Deconstructing Genesis (and not only). The Algebra Disc - INTERVIEW with MARIO GIAMMETTI

Algebra Double CD Released "Deconstructing Classics ". At the helm of the band a great protagonist of the Genesis world: Mario Giammetti, founder and director of the Dusk magazine. There are two on the album Special guest of exception. We interviewed him.

English English Italian Italiano

By DB

Destructuring the songs and remaking them according to a personal identity. Not tributes, but spontaneous reinterpretations.

It is the philosophy of "Deconstructing Classics" third album of the Campania group Algebra, almost 160 minutes of music on two CDs.

The first opens with the only new recording: a cover of La cura di Franco Battled with two great guests (Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips).

Cd 2 is completely unedited: alongside songs never published, they meet again improvisations, live performances and experiments, with a little gem
unpublished acoustic of the same Ant.

Here is the interview with the leader of the band Mario Giammetti:

HR: In the new cover of La Cura di Battiato you have two truly exceptional special guests: Steve Hackett and Anthony Phillips. It doesn't happen every day. How did you do it?

Mario Giammetti: Of course with Steve and Ant there has been a good relationship of friendship for many years, so it was not so difficult, at least in the case of Steve who, moreover, had already recorded a solo for the song "The deserted pier ", taken from our 2009 album "JL ". The only problem was waiting for him to find the time.

Was it difficult to convince Ant?

I didn't have to convince him, it was he who proposed himself! Which is really incredible. In truth, I really wanted to have him as a guest. I had already tried it ten years ago with "JL ".

At the time, listening to our demo, he told me that there was already a 12-string guitar on that record and that therefore we didn't need him! Beyond the undeserved compliment that he gave me, I was not surprised at all: I know Ant perfectly and I know that he does not do certain things lightly, but in the end he somehow participated equally by sending me his splendid photos of seascapes that we used for that album's internal booklet.

This time, I started from another thing: I told him about our project and I simply asked him for permission to use his unpublished 12-string piece. This is a variation on the agreements "Dusk" of the Genesis that Ant had very nicely recorded specially for my magazine's 25th party Dusk, celebrated in March 2016 in Adria (the town where Genesis held their first ever Italian concert in 1972). Not only did he immediately give me the go ahead for using that acoustic jewel (which I baptized "The Twilight"), but he also spontaneously offered to participate in the song in which I had anticipated that Steve would also play. I could not believe.

Can you tell us how their intervention in the piece is?

Steve plays the central guitar solo de "The cure", the only piece specially recorded for this disc which, for the rest, is made up of archival material. Also the original by Franco Battiato contains a guitar solo, ironically made by David Rhodes, historical guitarist of Peter Gabriel. Usually, in our reinterpretations, we like to change instruments for solos. Not in this case, however, the idea was simply to change guitarist and, with all due respect to Rhodes, with Hackett it's a whole other music!

We created a base of about two minutes, where we naturally left him free to do what he wanted. I find her beauty solo devastating. Among other things, I discovered only a few weeks ago that the sound engineer of the Battiato album that it contained "The cure", "The 1996 ambush", it was the same Ben Fenner who recorded Steve's solo for us in November 2018, when Hackett miraculously found the time.
So on "The cure", in the end, the Ant part was made when we still didn't have Steve's solo, although of course I informed him of where it would have been inserted, which makes an inconspicuous but absolutely effective performance even more precious .

Not only: Ant then played the same instruments present under Steve's solo (12-string guitar and harpsichord) also in the instrumental tail, on a sequence added by us with the protagonist sax. In this section, the beaten chords of Ant's harpsichord pleasantly change the mood of the final part of the song.

There are other Genesis tributes on the record. Which?

Way back in 1995, beating the American label a few months without knowing it Magna Carta, I was the first madman in the world who had the idea of making a tribute to Genesis, immediately married by the boss of the Mellow Records (which would later dedicate similar tributes to other glorious bands). As an artistic co-producer, it seemed inevitable to leave the honor and burden of opening the double CD to Algebra "The River Of Constant Change", and the choice could only fall on "Dusk".

Our version was very different, with an introduction of solo guitar and drum beats, a central rhythm section and violin and sax interventions. A few months later, a part of the bands involved brought that tribute also to the stages of some places in northern Italy. In the half hour at our disposal, fully reported in the second CD of "Deconstructing Classics"broken by a long instrumental piece of our composition, we played "Dusk" e "Open Door", the latter in a version stylistically quite distorted by the addition of sax, accordion and drums.

Finally with Genesis, in 2003 there was an acoustic performance by "Ripples" in reduced training (I acoustic guitar and voice, my sister Maria on sax and voice, Roberto Polcino on piano) for some book presentations published, or waiting to be published, by Editori Riuniti, where the authors (as in my case) they were also journalists. The performance took place at the well known Big Mama From Rome; I asked the technician to record it with the mixer, but he refused. So we used the test from the day before, done in the studio but strictly live and without overdubs.

Tribute also to Hackett, with "Sleepers". How did you do it?

In August 2008, I hosted a couple of English friends at my house. One of these was Nick Clabburn, an inseparable friend of Steve Hackett (as well as lyricist of the first two rock albums of his brother John). It was hot and Nick could not sleep, so during the night he sent Steve this text message: "all the sleepers send you their dreams”, Referring to the other occupants of the house. Hackett was so touched by Clabburn's poetry that he built a splendid song around this phrase, Sleepers (this episode is also reported on Steve's official website: http://www.hackettsongs.com/blog/well2.html).

Almost twenty years after the tribute to Genesis, Mauro Moroni thought of dedicating himself to solo Genesis, first publishing a tribute to Gabriel (in which Algebra did not participate, even though I wrote the cover notes), then one to Hackett . It seemed interesting to pay homage to that song which, albeit indirectly, belonged to me at least a little, also to detach ourselves from too obvious choices (not surprisingly, "Sleepers" it's just one of two tracks out of 16 that isn't part of Steve's very first albums!). Of course also in this case we tried to do it our way, inserting purple parts at the beginning and at the end, while in the central nightmare section there is even some growl.

There is no shortage of those to Peter Gabriel Ray Wilson and Anthony Phillips. Can you describe them?

The original Moroni project I told you before also included, after those dedicated to Gabriel and Hackett, a third volume on the remaining soloists. Disc which, unfortunately, is only released digitally (with the title "In The Land Of Geese, Ghosts And Confusion"). As for Algebra, I immediately liked the idea of giving relief to the only one that certainly no one else would have dealt with: Ray Wilson. Scelsi "Goodbye Baby Blue", a beautiful song from his first album "Change", as always revisited in our own way with an added part dominated by the sax. We also participated in that tribute with a couple of spin-offs, with two other songs dedicated to Phillips: Rino Pastore, under the pseudonym The Shepherd, made a sung version in Italian of "The Anthem From Tarka", while my sister Maria and I, with the name MariGiam, recorded "God If I Saw Her Now". The original performance of the latter seemed to us worthy of appearing on the Algebra album.

Even the packaging is of the highest standard. How was it made and by whom?

It's so true. Despite the prohibitive printing costs, for me there was no plan b, as someone had suggested: the disc had to be made properly, otherwise I would have preferred to leave everything in the drawer of memories. So I relied on great professionals like Bob Fix (for burning), who in some cases are also fantastic friends. Like Maurizio and Angéla Vicedomini, whom Genesis fans know well by being the photographers of the covers of Steve Hackett's latest records. For us they have immortalized a little girl who runs happily between the windows of La DÃ © fence of Paris, an image that immediately conquered me for its spontaneous light-heartedness, as well as for its beauty and that I also find very suitable for the title of the album and, in some ways, for the thematic content of the "The cure". Roberto Conditi (who for years has also taken care of the covers of Dusk), which was, as always, exceptional. The double cd comes in a nice digipack hardcover. On both sides, where the discs are inserted, there are frame . video de La cura, which can be viewed here:

while a rich man is glued to the center booklet 28 pages containing detailed notes song by song, almost always accompanied by photographs relating to the reference period. Here and there, therefore, Steve and Anthony also meet.

Can you introduce us to the components of Algebra?

Rino Pastore is the only founding member of the surviving group. He plays the keyboards and the two oldest songs on this record (1983/84) are flour from his sack. One also sings it. Rino is always original in his approach and is often the driving force behind the most bizarre ideas, which is a predominant feature of Algebra.

The other keyboard player is Roberto Polcino, technically very good and master of the arrangements. He is involved in several situations, including the Playtoy Orchestra, a band that plays exclusively toy instruments and that we have often seen on television and is back from a lucky tour in China.

Franco Ciani is a very expert drummer who has played with practically everyone in our city (Benevento). He is also a good arranger, Franco has the advantage of coloring our songs in an unmistakable way with his percussion, almost always real and rarely electronic instruments.

Finally my sister Maria, who was for almost seven years the saxophonist of Massimo Ranieri, with whom she traveled the world holding something like 750 concerts of the show "I sing because I can't swim", often seen also on Rai. Over time his sax has become the main solo instrument in our songs, especially for the covers, and his performances are always spontaneous and often tinged with jazz.

How can you buy the disc?

Although released on the Andromeda Relix label, the disc is virtually a self-production, completed thanks to the generosity of my brotherly friend Stefano Tucciarelli. As this is a limited edition, apart from those sent to the distributor, anyone wishing to purchase it can contact me via mail.

Finally, as a colleague and also as a person who never has a minute left: but how do you find time to play too?

Time is a relative concept. You have to be able to use it in the best way. Or make a deal with the devil.

"Flotsam And Jetsam", Peter Gabriel's digital collection - BUY

Digital release for B-sides, Remixes and Rarities.

English English Italian Italiano

By DB

Flotsam and Jetsam is a collection of B-sides, remixes and rarities from across Peter Gabriel's solo career. Over 60 tracks are featured, mostly all of which have been previously released physically, either on 7 ", 12" or CD singles, soundtrack or tribute albums, but, with a few exceptions, are being released digitally for the first time.

The collection - arranged chronologically - is split into three eras. The first, 1976-1985, covers the period from Peter first going solo to the end of his run of four self-titled solo albums. It opens with a cover version of 'Strawberry Fields Forever', the first time Peter featured on a release after leaving Genesis. The second, 1986-1993, are Peter's popstar years with music released around the albums 'So' and 'Us'. The third era is 1994-2016and features remixes from the 'Up' album, plus tracks used in various films and notable cover versions. It ends with Peter's song 'The Veil', written especially for the Oliver Stone movie 'Snowden'.
