Defector è il quarto album in studio di Steve Hackett, pubblicato il 13 giugno 1980 con Charisma Records.

Il suo album precedente, Spectral Mornings era stato il suo più venduto. Hackett voleva capitalizzare lo slancio commerciale, provando nuovo materiale con la sua band in tour prima di registrarlo in studio.
Dopo il tour di Spectral Mornings, infatti, Hackett ha portato la sua band nei Wessex Sound Studios ad Highbury, a nord di Londra, per registrare l’album.
Defector è l’album di Hackett che ha raggiunto il punto più alto in classifica nella UK Albums Chart, piazzandosi al n. 9.

Molti fan considerano questo come l’ultimo album del suo periodo classico da solista. In effetti, dopo la sua pubblicazione, Hackett è diventato sempre più consapevole della direzione musicale dei suoi album precedenti e ha puntato a una svolta in quello successivo.
Nel 2005, Defector è stato rimasterizzato per Virgin Records. La nuova edizione presenta note di copertina aggiornate e cinque bonus track.
Un mix surround è stato incluso nel cofanetto “Premonitions: The Charisma Recordings 1975–1983“.
