Londra, 1985. Steve Hackett, ex chitarrista dei Genesis, e Steve Howe, leggenda degli Yes, si incontrano a Holland Park e danno vita a uno dei supergruppi più attesi e controversi del decennio: i GTR.
Ma Hackett e Howe erano complementari sulla carta, opposti nella pratica, nel modo di intendere la musica, il denaro, il futuro. Un matrimonio di convenienza, come lo definì lo stesso Hackett.
Il volume ricostruisce le origini biografiche dei due protagonisti, le trattative discografiche con Geffen e Arista, le sessioni ai leggendari Townhouse Studios di Londra, l’analisi traccia per traccia dell’album omonimo, il calendario completo del tour mondiale, la caduta, il secondo album fantasma e la rivalutazione tardiva arrivata con la ristampa del 2015.
“Jekyll e Hyde” è la prima ricostruzione italiana completa di questa storia: un singolo Top 15 negli USA (When the Heart Rules the Mind), un album certificato disco d’oro, trentasette concerti in tutto il mondo con show di quasi tre ore strutturati in quattro atti distinti.
Nei GTR la complessità armonica e la profondità strumentale del prog britannico degli anni Settanta incontra le produzioni lucide, potenti e radiofoniche degli anni Ottanta.
Chitarre al centro di tutto, acustiche, elettriche, synth, in un progetto che voleva essere la risposta al dominio delle tastiere nell’era dei sintetizzatori. Influsso di Genesis, Yes, Asia, Marillion, e non solo.
Poi il collasso finanziario, le tensioni interne mai risolte, un secondo disco quasi completato e mai pubblicato, e uno scioglimento amaro che lasciò tutti con lastessa domanda: cosa sarebbero potuti diventare, con più tempo e meno interferenze?

Come è caratteristica della musica progressiva, la classica, il jazz, il rock, il funk, il pop e il folk hanno tutti voce in capitolo.
