“Smallcreep’s Day” fu registrato nel 1979 mentre i Genesis stavano attraversando un periodo di inattività (anche Tony Banks h registrato il suo primo album da solista “A Curious Feeling” nello stesso periodo) e fu pubblicato un mese prima che i Genesis pubblicassero il decimo album in studio “Duke“.
L’album comprendeva anche Anthony Phillips, Simon Phillips, Morris Pert e Noel McCalla. La lunga title track era ispirata dall’omonimo romanzo di Peter Currell Brown, una satira surreale sulla moderna vita industriale.
L’album attualmente non appare su nessun sito di streaming (così come il seguito solista di Rutherford del 1982 “Acting Very Strange”) ed è improbabile che l’album appaia presto su Spotify, quindi da non perdere questo CD.
Il 2 ottobre 1950 nasceva Michael John Cloete Crawford Rutherford. Ecco alcuni momenti della sua carriera (in ordine rigorosamente non cronologico).
Ha co-fondato la school band Anon con Anthony Phillips e Richard Macphail, nel 1965, dopo di che si sono divisi e hanno formato i Genesis nel 1967 con i compagni di Charterhouse, Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel e Chris Stewart. Rutherford non amava il suo periodo alla Charterhouse ed è stato espulso per reati minori:

Durante i primi tour dal vivo, Rutherford utilizzava spesso un doppio manico Rickenbacker costruito su misura con chitarra a 12 corde a corpo semi-vuoto e un basso a 4 corde (ora in mostra al Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum).
Per “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” e la prima parte del “Trick of the Tail” tour, ha incorporato una chitarra Rickenbacker a 12 corde a corpo solido e una Micro-Frets Signature Baritone a 6 corde, dotata di corde di basso a 6 corde a scala corta.
In seguito è passato a un’altra combinazione di 12 corde a corpo solido e 6 corde per basso. Per i tour “Mama” e “Invisible Touch” aveva una chitarra a sei corde e un basso a quattro corde inseriti in un corpo personalizzato
Per il tour del 2007 con i Genesis, Rutherford aveva una chitarra Gibson a dodici corde con un basso Yamaha TRB-4P. Fonte.

Oltre ai Genesis, agli ex Genesis, ai musicisti dei suoi album solisti e ai Mechanics, Mike ha suonato in pubblico con Brian May, David Gilmour, Joe Walsh e molti altri chitarristi al Strat Pack Concert nel 2004, per celebrare i 50 anni della Fender Stratocaster:

Mike lo ha registrato nel 1979 durante un periodo di inattività dei Genesis, durante il quale lui e Tony Banks hanno realizzato i loro primi album da solista.
La title track di 24 minuti è basata sul romanzo “Smallcreep’s Day” di Peter Currell Brown del 1965, che racconta la storia del signor Smallcreep e il viaggio alla scoperta di se stesso, attraverso la catena di montaggio della fabbrica in cui ha lavorato per quarant’anni. Rispetto all’originale cui è ispirata, la storia narrata da Mike nell’album prevede un happy end.
Rutherford ha utilizzato brevi idee musicali sviluppate in diversi anni e inutilizzate. Questi brani sono diventati una lunga canzone che occupa un intero lato del vinile.
“Una delle cose più belle del fare il disco era decidere con chi volevo lavorare – ricorda Mike –: Simon Phillips, un batterista che avevo sempre ammirato; Noel McCalla, un cantante di session con una voce molto alta, e Ant (Anthony Phillips, N.d.R.) alle tastiere. In qualsiasi altra band, un componente che lavora con altri musicisti avrebbe causato un incidente diplomatico, tipo: “Cosa c’è che non va in noi?” Ma Tony stava cogliendo anche lui l’occasione per fare un album da solista mentre Phil era via e il legame tra di noi era tale che non ci siamo mai sentiti minacciati da nessun a delle cose che abbiamo fatto al di fuori della band.”
La copertina è stata disegnata e illustrata da Storm Thorgerson e Aubrey Powell di Hipgnosis, che avevano prodotto quelle degli album dei Genesis “A Trick of the Tail”, “Wind & Wuthering” e “…And Then There Were Three….”.
“Storm Thorgerson aveva progettato diverse copertine per i Genesis e
quindi mi è sembrata una scelta naturale per il design di Smallcreep’s Day”, ricorda Mike.
Dopo aver scelto un’immagine che voleva sulla copertina, l’idea di Thorgerson prevedeva di spruzzarla con l’inchiostro in fase di sviluppo, in modo che questa venisse fuori solo in parte. Sono state prodotte sei diverse versioni, e Rutherford ha scelto il design che gli piaceva di più.
“Come album Smallcreep’s Day è abbastanza forte dal punto di vista strumentale, ma il suo vero valore è stato come un soffio di aria fresca creativa – ricorda ancora Mike –. A differenza di altre band, i nostri progetti solisti non sono mai stati una reazione all’insoddisfazione per quello che facevamo come gruppo. Avevamo lavorato sempre su progetti solisti tra un album e l’altro. È stata una delle cose che ci hanno caratterizzato in modo unico come band e che ci ha fatto andare avanti. Abbiamo imparato ad apprezzare gli altri membri della band e, poiché stavamo facendo qualcosa di diverso e ci stavamo sfidando individualmente.”
L’album ha raggiunto il numero 13 nella classifica degli album del Regno Unito e il numero 163 nella Billboard 200 degli Stati Uniti.
Rutherford ha pubblicato due singoli dell’album. Il primo, “Working in Line” con il brano non inserito nell’album “Compression” sul lato B, è stato pubblicato nel febbraio 1980. Un secondo, “Time and Time Again” e “At the End of the Day”, è stato pubblicato a luglio.

The first ever live performance of the solo music of Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford composed in the 1970s, will be performed live on the Trading Boundaries stage.
The evenings, endorsed by both Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford, has Rocking Horse Music Club from the USA returning to Trading Boundaries to showcase the music of Anthony Phillips with additional songs from Mike Rutherford’s first solo album ‘Smallcreep’s Day’ with Noel McCalla, who provided original vocals on the album, joining them on stage.
Working directly with Anthony Phillips, Rocking Horse Music Club has lovingly curated a selection of songs primarily from his first three solo albums, The Geese & the Ghost, Wise After the Event, and Sides.
This will be the first time this music will be performed live by a full band – LAST TICKETS
Rocking Horse Music Club includes Coombes (keyboards/vocals), Eric Wagley (drums), Brenden Harisiades (bass), Myron Kibbee (guitars), Mike McAdam (guitars), Patrik Gochez (vocals/piano/guitar), and Justin Cohn (vocals/guitar).

Rocking Horse Music Club has recently received two Best Song nominations from the Independent Music Awards for its song, Everywhere is Home, which features London’s Sing Gospel choir. The song has received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and London Live, as well as regional BBC and independent radio in the UK. The band toured the UK in support of its debut album in September 2018, including an appearance on BBC Radio Kent and a well-received performance here at Trading Boundaries.

From his days as a 15 year old playing support to The Shadows at a pub gig to appearing as lead singer with headliners on most of Europe’s biggest stages with Mezzoforte and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Noel McCalla has consistently stood out from the crowd.
As singer with Sniff’n the Tears, Moon and McCalla and a long association with the brilliant Morrisey/Mullen Band, and was vocalist on Mike Rutherford’s Smallcreep’s Day – he was considered as the replacement for Genesis singer and frontman Peter Gabriel after he left the group in 1975.
